Reading
Instructor: Mrs. Roth
Welcome to Reading Resource! My name is Karen Roth. I am the Reading Resource teacher.  It is my job to monitor the reading progress of our students, support teachers in their classroom reading instruction, oversee the PALS assessment program and PALS tutoring, and provide reading resource instruction for those students struggling with reading. Struggling students are identified through teacher observation and assessments.  One assessment tool that we use is the Phonological Literacy Screening Assessment of PALS Screening assessment.  This assessment is given to students in Kindergarten through third grade. We give this assessment in the fall and spring.  Struggling readers are given a mid-year assessment to monitor their progress.  The PALS checks five components of reading development. These components are phonemic awareness (hearing sounds in words), phonics (matching letters to sounds in reading and spelling), fluency (reading with speed, accuracy and expression), vocabulary and comprehension.  The PALS web site, http://pals.virginia.edu has helpful information and activities for students under the tabs on the homepage. This web site contains links to other sites that will help your child grow as a reader. Scroll down the page to see them.  If you have questions, please feel free to contact me at 703-497-7619 or http://www.rothke@pwcs.edu .

Parents: The Best Reading Model
A number of years ago, the government spent money to find out what was the most effective reading program for children.  Everyone was surprised by the results.  It was not what a program did.  It was what parents did in the early years of their child's life that determined their reading success.  The answer was as simple as reading with children on a daily basis.  The amount of time spent reading with parents was the best predictor of reading success. Parents are the most important people in their children's lives.  From the time they are babies, children are watching and learning from their parents.  Teachers are important, but the strongest influence comes from home.  Do you read to your children and listen to them read?  Since you are your children's most important role model, they must see you as a reader.  They need to see you reading books, magazines, newspapers and recipes as examples.  They need to see you choose your own books to read at the library.  "Do as I do" rather than "do as I say" is very powerful.  Read to your children every day.  Use the public library and discover how entertaining good children's books can be.
